Dr. Hsu is the chairman of department of surgery at Taichung Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan, a highly respected leader in thoracic surgery. He obtained his MD. degree in 1980. Afterwards he received strict general thoracic surgical training in Taipei Veterans General Hospital, till he became an attending doctor. From 1993 to 1994, he went to Duke University Medical Center in USA as a research fellow and focused his interest in newly developed thoracoscopic surgical technique.

He has devoted himself to the area of thoracic surgery for almost 30 years. In addition to lung cancer surgery, treatment of esophageal cancer is also his expertise. Moreover, Dr. Hsu is skilled in VATS. He applies VATS in dealing with both lung and esophageal tumors and acquired many successes. He also developed a reverse sequence procedure for treatment of esophageal cancer patients.

Dr. Hsu has published more than 140 research articles and contributed to book chapters in thoracoscopic technique for lung resection and thymectomy. His research interest is focusing on control mechanism of telomerase activity and recently also uses bioinformatics analysis to find connections between the myasthenia gravis and thymoma. Meanwhile, Dr. Hsu wants to predict the outcome of radiation therapy and chemotherapy for patients with esophageal tumor through studying their gene expressions.

Dr. Hsu also dedicates himself to medical education and helps many medical students become excellent surgeons. He is a member of several medical societies, including Taiwan Association of Thoracic & Cardiovascular Surgery, the European Association for Cardio-thoracic Surgery, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons USA, Asia Thoracoscopic Surgery Education Program and Taiwan Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition. This year, he was elected as the president of TSPEN. By joining in these societies, he tries to make medical education and service quality better than ever.
