Thorsten Walles, MD, FETCS

Prof. Dr. Thorsten Walles is Head of the Thoracic Surgery Department at the Magdeburg University Hospital. He graduated from Hannover Medical School (2000) and spent a research fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (1997-1998). He received his thoracic surgery training and was mentored by Godehard Friedel (2003-2009). In 2009, he became assistant professor for Thoracic Surgery at the Eberhard-Karls-University Tuebingen. From 2012 to 2016 he headed the thoracic surgery section at the Julius-Maximilians-University Wuerzburg. In 2017, he became full-professor for Thoracic Surgery at the Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg. He is heading the department for Thoracic Surgery. Between 2012 and 2016 he was council member of the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons. His major research interests are tissue engineering and surgical treatment of lung cancer. His research resulted in some of the first bioartificial airway implants in patients.
